an exhibition by Quirk Theatre
What is the name of your favourite toy? How did you get it? Have you ever lost it? Where does it live now?
Quirk Theatre’s 2019 Christmas show, The Velveteen Rabbit, was all about our main character Alice’s very favourite toys, and so we wanted to hear all about the favourite childhood companions of Exeter’s residents. We collated these cuddly photos into an exhibition which ran at the Exeter Phoenix's Walkway Gallery in November & December 2019.
We recruited five brilliant local young photographers - Anneka, Ellie, Bronwyn, Eve and Azna - to explore these stories. Mentored by photographer Nicky Thompson, over three intense (and intensely cute) sessions, these five young artists composed and photographed portraits of eighteen Exeter residents, of all backgrounds, each with their favourite toy or item.
Three smaller portraits were then selected in our #myfavouritetoy competition and were framed in the gallery alongside the young photographer's work.
You can see all of the portraits created and sent in at the Gallery below. Enjoy!
